The Wedding Dress

With regards the extraordinary world of brides, there is much to discuss, but this time let’s focus on the fundamental : the wedding dress. What to say about this remarkable piece in the woman’s life, perhaps the most important dress that a woman will ever wear. A piece that carries history, expectations, love, idealization, tradition and fulfillment.

In the wedding tradition, the wedding dress was not white, but was rather found in various colours such as green, yellow, red, black. Sumptuous dresses that reflected the power of the families involved, since marriage was a contract, often signed by the parents of the bride and groom. The dress was chosen and put aside to celebrate this rite of passage, whether the wedding, contract or agreement.

It is unclear who wore the first white wedding dress, some say it was Queen Mary Stuart of Scotland, others claim it was Queen Mary de Médici of France, or possibly the first person to marry in a completely white gown was Queen Victoria of England in 1840.

Queen Victoria’s silk and lace dress was chosen to bring exaltation, since white symbolized wealth and also because Queen Victoria was married for love, not convenience. Queen Victoria, despite having a striking style and already setting trends at that time, did not anticipate that white would become a tradition. A few decades after her wedding, the white wedding dress was adopted by Europe and also by America.

Over time, and according to changes in fashion, wedding dresses continued to evolve. Each decade was marked by a style. Some moments featured fabrics with textures, puffed sleeves, wide skirts, cuts and necklines never seen before. Even the most modest brides wanted to wear a striking and sumptuous dress.

The contemporary bride looks for a dress that reflects her personality, following popular fashion trends, with head ornaments, veils, shoes and other accessories. The industry offers dresses of the most varied styles, from the simplest to the most exuberant. Nowadays brides are back to allowing colours, which can be any, as long as they reflect the personality of the bride. The most used colours for wedding dresses today are white, off-white, nude, ivory, champagne and dusty rose. The dresses are made in striking fabrics, silks, satin, tulles, lace, embroidery and a design that enhances feminine curves and shapes. The most varied shapes and cuts like evasé, fluid, princess, meringue, mermaid, trumpet, empire and short bring to life the fantasy of the wedding dress.

Wedding dresses are dreams and charms, both for the woman who is getting married and for the designer … the involvement and delivery of both parties, for the creation and crafting demands art, passion, love, commitment and an almost insane desire to see her art shine with the smile of an accomplished bride.
